Course Completion Rate
This indicator refers to the proportion of courses or individual components of a qualification passed relative to enrolments.
Refers to spending on industry goods and services within New Zealand, regardless of their country of origin. It is derived by adding imports to industry revenue, and then subtracting exports.
Educational Performance Indicators (EPIs)
A group of performance indicators that give a view of how well the tertiary providers are helping their students to achieve. They show how many students progress and stay in study, and how many courses and qualifications are completed.
Individuals earning salary and wages from the given ANZSIC industry reflected in their income tax return
Individuals earning shareholder salary, company director/sharholder income, sole trader income, partner income from the given ANZSIC industry in their tax return
Whether the individual is an employee (earning wages or salary from an enterprise) or self-employed.
Ethnicity - Total response (Learner)
The ethnicity reported by the learner. Where a learner has reported more than one ethnicity the learner will be counted in each ethnicity. This means the total count by individual ethnicity may be greater than the total number of learners shown. When calculating participation rates, it is calculated as a proportion of learners with known ethnicity, i.e., where a learner has identified at least one ethnicity.
Ethnicity - Total response (Workforce)
The ethnicity reported by the individual from the "data.personal_detail" table in the Integrated Data Infrastructure. Where an individual has reported more than one ethnicity they will be counted in each ethnicity. Ethnicity information from different Integrated Data Infrastructure collections is combined using the source ranked ethnicity method by Stats NZ. Data sources containing ethnicity information are ranked according to quality, and each individual is assigned the ethnicity responses from the highest ranked data source available. Ethnicity is recorded at Level 1 groupings (European, Māori, Pacific, Asian, Middle Eastern/Latin American/African, Other).
Total value of industry goods and services sold by New Zealand companies to customers abroad.
First Year Apprentice Retention Rate
The first year apprentice retention rate measures how many New Zealand Apprentices are retained in their apprenticeship after their first 12 months of training.
First year retention rate
The first year retention rate is the proportion of students who are retained in study after their first year of study by enrolling in a qualification at the same level in the year after they enter the cohort. First year retention rates are only calculated for learners who enrol in NZQF levels 4 and above and for longer qualifications (those that would be expected to take the equivalent of two or more years of fulltime study).

These are jobs which exist continuously over the reference quarter.
GDP/Industry Values Added (IVA)
The market value of goods and services produced by the industry minus the cost of goods and services used in production. IVA is also described as the industry's contribution to GDP, or profit plus wages and depreciation.

The industrial classification of the industry in which the individual is employed. The industrial classification used is the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) 2006.
The Māori-owned business analysis only reflects the businesses that have ownership data that indicate whether a business is Māori-owned. Only roughly 1/3 of all businesses have ownership data available.
The industrial classification of the industry in which the learner is primarily employed. The industrial classification is based on the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) 2006.
The total sales of industry goods and services (exclusive of excise and sales tax); subsidies on production; all other operating income from outside the firm (such as commission income, repair and service income, and rent, leasing and hiring income); and capital work done by rental or lease. Receipts from interest royalties, dividends and the sale of fixed tangible assets are excluded.
Industry Training Organisations (ITOs) are recognised by the Associate Minister of Education (Tertiary Education) under the Industry Training Act 1992. They are established by particular industries and are responsible for:
• setting national skill standards for their industry
• providing information and advice to trainees and their employers
• arranging for the delivery of on and off-job training (including developing training packages for employers)
• arranging for the assessment of trainees and
• arranging the monitoring of quality training
Learner Attendance type
Indicates whether the course was attended intramural/extramural.
1. Intramural and residing in New Zealand — covers courses where students must be physically present in scheduled teaching sessions in New Zealand in order to meet the course requirements. These courses may, however, include periods of supervised research and clinical or field experience which may take place outside the campus.
2. Extramural and residing in New Zealand — covers students who are resident in New Zealand and unable to attend on-campus courses in New Zealand. These courses use postal services and distance communication Technology. These courses may, however, include short periods of on-campus attendance.
3. Extramural and residing overseas — covers students who are resident overseas and are unable to attend on-campus courses in New Zealand.
4. Intramural and residing overseas — covers courses where students must be physically present in scheduled teaching sessions at a Tertiary Education Organisation’s campus located in an overseas country in order to meet the course requirements. These courses may, however, include periods of supervised research and clinical or field experience which may take place outside the campus."

Counts of learners are rounded to the nearest '5', values less than 3 are suppressed.
A Māori-owned business is defined as a business which meets one or more of the following criteria:
• A business that pays at least 50% of wages to active shareholders, directors or partners of Māori ethnicity or descent.
• A business identified as Māori by Stats NZ.
Refers to the median earnings of all full-quarter jobs. All earnings measures represent quarterly earnings, are inclusive of tax, and include payments reported as lump sums to the Inland Revenue.

Tertiary qualifications and industry training programmes are assigned a New Zealand Standard Classification of Education (NZSCED) code depending on the subject area of the qualification for Tertiary Education Institutions and Private Training Establishments, or programmes for Industry Training Organisations. Where an industry training programme does not have a target qualification (limited credit programmes, supplementary credit programmes, complex apprenticeships), the NZSCED has been assigned by Tertiary Education Commission based on information derived from the programme information.
IBISWorld, an industry-market research company, uses earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) as an indicator of a company’s profitability. It is calculated as revenue minus expenses, excluding interest and tax.
Programme Completion Rate
The cohort-based programme completion rate measures how many learners in a starting cohort go on to complete a programme at the same NZQF level after a given period.
The progression rate is the proportion of students who complete a qualification at one Tertiary Education Organisation and within 12 months of completion enrol in higher level qualification at the same or a different Tertiary Education Organisation within New Zealand. It shows the proportion of students enrolling in a higher level qualification after completing a New Zealand Qualification Framework level 1 to 4 qualification

The qualification completion rate measures how many learners in a starting cohort go on to complete a qualification at the same level after a given amount of time.
Region refers to where the qualification or programme of delivery occurred, not necessarily where the learner resides. Where a student is studying extramurally, the learner region has been defined by the region associated with the learner's permanent postcode if available.
The regional council of the individual, as identified as the latest address updated in administration records in the Integrated Data Infrastructure.
Groupings of industries in which the individual is employed that reflect similar activities e.g. 'fishing'.

Total filled jobs
This is an indicator of economic activity. Refers to the number of jobs on the 15th of the middle month of the reference quarter. It does not distinguish between part-time and full-time jobs.
The gross total wages and salaries of all employees in the industry.
Worker Turnover Rate
This is a measure of workforce stability. The worker turnover rate reflects the movement of workers into and out of jobs. A lower percentage of worker turnover rate indicates more workforce stability.
Employee and/or employer numbers of certain industries might be suppressed according to IDI microdata suppression rules. Suppression will happen when employee/employer counts are fewer than 6 or count of entities are fewer than 3.
Refers to the total number of individuals who worked within an industry within a given calendar year.

Year (Learners’ data)
The reporting year as provided in Ngā Kete is the year the learner was enrolled in a Tertiary Education Organisation. Where a learner’s enrolment starts in one year and ends in another, the learner will be reported in each year.
Year (LEED data)
The calendar year is divided into four quarters, each with three months. The latest quarter is the ‘reference quarter’.
Year in this dashboard refers to the 'calendar year' that an individual was employed or received income from a business. The only exception is the Māori business analysis, in which 'tax year' has been used due to the availability of business data in the Integrated Data Infrastructure. 2021 employer number is still incomplete due to the time-lag in reporting of employer's tax return. To avoid confusion, the 2021 employer number has been set to zero.
